O R A L   H I S T O R Y   A S S O C I A T I O N

This series of tapes was recorded at the Second Science Fiction Oral History Conference, held in conjunction with the Science Fiction Convention, Genuine ConFusion, at the Plymouth, Michigan Hilton Hotel, January 27-29, 1984.

The First Science Fiction Oral History Conference was held before the Science Fiction Oral History Association was founded.  It was, in fact, the site of the organizing meeting for SFOHA.  It took place in Ann Arbor, Michigan, at an earlier occurrence of ConFusion:  the last weekend of January in 1977.

The Second Science Fiction Oral History Conference was conceived as a demonstration of what a well-planned oral history conference should consist of.  It would not, we decided, be the typical academic conference where papers were read at an audience.  The conference was planned as a workshop, and at one point we had eight interviewing/recording sessions going on simultaneously.  One college professor remarked afterward, "This was a very unusual conference.  You made us work!"  The long list of individuals taking part can be seen in the descriptions of tapes.

Notes:  Originally this series was called 2OHC;  someone pointed out the probability of people reading that as 20 HC, so we changed it.  (Conceivably, at some time in the future there could be a 20th Oral History Conference, which under the old system would have made that series designated 20OHC and caused no small confusion between that and a 2OHC series.)  In the organization's archives, the labels on tapes at the beginning of the series are "2OHC."

Some interviewers make reference to a "second tape" when they mean "second side."  On January 27, some interviewers referred to the date as January 26.

Some interviews that were conducted at later dates by John Carr were actually a continuation of the research concerning Leigh Brackett and Ed Hamilton that he was pursuing at the Second Science Fiction Oral History Conference, and these have been placed at the end of the series.
